What Happens Above That Wall: Opening a 1990s MoVal Kitchen

Short Version

Whether the wall between your kitchen and the family room can come out is answered by what sits on top of it, not by how thin it looks. Ben reads the framing direction and the load above it on the first visit. A bearing wall is not a stopping point. It is a beam, posts, footings, engineering, and a permit, all of which have to be in the plan from the start.

The kitchens that came with this city’s growth years were drawn as their own room. Doorway on one end, pass-through on the other, and the cook facing a wall while everybody else is somewhere else. Owners who have lived with that for twenty years do not ask for a new countertop. They ask for the wall to be gone. That is a fair request and it is a structural one.

Load Bearing or Just In the Way

There is no reliable way to tell from the kitchen side. Thickness does not tell you. Whether it holds a pass-through does not tell you. Ben goes looking above instead.

What he wants to know is which direction the framing overhead runs and what is stacked on it. A wall running perpendicular to the joists above it is very often carrying them. A wall running parallel to them frequently is not. Then he checks what sits over that: another floor, a roof structure, a run of trusses that may be spanning past the wall entirely and landing on the exterior. Trusses change the answer, because a properly designed truss carries its own span, which sometimes means an interior wall under it is doing nothing but holding drywall.

Attic access settles most of it in about ten minutes. Occasionally it does not, and then a small inspection opening in the ceiling is the honest move rather than a confident guess. Getting this wrong in either direction is expensive. Calling a bearing wall non-bearing is dangerous. Calling a non-bearing wall bearing means you paid for a beam and engineering you never needed.

Where the Weight Goes After the Wall Leaves

Removing a bearing wall does not remove the load. It relocates it, and the whole job is about making the new path as sound as the old one.

The beam replaces the wall and carries the load across the opening. It rests on posts at each end, and those posts carry down through the framing below to something that can take the weight. On a single-story house over a slab, that usually means the load lands on the concrete, and the question becomes whether the slab in that spot is thick enough or whether a pad footing gets poured under it. Standing a post on a random point of a slab and hoping is how a floor cracks and a header sags.

The beam gets sized by an engineer, not by rule of thumb. Span, load above, and what it can be made of all interact. A wider opening usually means a deeper beam, which is why the finished ceiling sometimes shows a soffit where the beam is. Flush beams that hide entirely inside the ceiling are possible and cost more, because the framing has to be cut and hung around them. Ben shows you both versions before the drawings go in, since a dropped beam that reads as intentional is often the better looking answer anyway.

Temporary Support Is the Day That Matters

The riskiest hour of a wall removal is the one where the wall is gone and the beam is not in yet. That gap gets bridged with temporary shoring, and how it is built is what separates a controlled job from a bad afternoon.

Shoring goes up on both sides of the wall before anything comes out, picking up the load above and holding it while the old framing is removed. It gets built to carry what is actually up there rather than to look adequate. Then the beam goes in, the posts get set, the connections are made, and only then does the shoring come down.

Around that day there is dust, and the dust is the part households feel. Kitchen demolition throws material everywhere and a slab-on-grade house has no basement to lose it into. Plastic goes up at every opening into the rest of the house, returns get covered so the air handler is not distributing drywall dust into bedrooms, and floors on the path in and out get protected. Plan Check, Inspections, and Who Stands There

A structural opening is permitted work, and in this city the review happens locally rather than at the county, which helps. The submittal wants a plan showing the opening, the beam and post schedule, and the engineer’s calculations for the load path down to the foundation.

Inspections then pace the build rather than following it. The framing inspection has to happen with the beam, posts, and connections visible, which means drywall does not go up when the crew is ready. It goes up when the inspector has looked. Same story with rough electrical and plumbing if the layout changes, and a kitchen layout change nearly always brings receptacle spacing, circuit requirements, and ground-fault protection along with it.

A failed inspection is a week of a gutted kitchen sitting still, and that week is the expensive one.

How Many Weeks You Are Eating Takeout

The honest answer is that the wall is not what sets the calendar. Cabinets are.

Cabinet lead time is the long pole in nearly every kitchen, so the order goes in early and demolition does not start until those boxes have a firm delivery date. A crew tearing out a kitchen that then sits gutted waiting on a truck is dead time you live in. After that the run is predictable: demolition, structural work, rough trades, framing and rough inspections, drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets, then a countertop template taken off the installed boxes.

That template is the second unavoidable wait. Tops are fabricated from a measurement of what is actually there, not from the plan, so there is a stretch after cabinets are set with no counters in the room. Backsplash, appliances, plumbing trim, and the final inspection close it out. A structural opening adds engineering time at the front and inspection holds in the middle, so a job that takes a wall out runs meaningfully longer than one that keeps its footprint.
