Murrieta Kitchen Remodel Timeline: Demo to Move-Back-In

Quick Answer

A Murrieta kitchen refresh runs 4-6 weeks. A reconfigure with new layout runs 8-12 weeks. A gut-and-rebuild with structural changes runs 12-18 weeks. The biggest timeline drivers are cabinet lead time, countertop template-and-fab, and any wall removal.

The second question every Murrieta homeowner asks me, right after the cost, is how long they will be living out of a microwave. Fair question. The honest answer depends on which of three tiers your kitchen falls into, and on three lead times that get locked in during the first week of the project. I have walked a lot of families through this, and the difference between a smooth eight weeks and a miserable fourteen is almost never the construction itself. It is the decisions and the ordering calendar. Here is the schedule the way I lay it out at the kitchen table.

What Drives the Timeline

Three things set the length of a Murrieta kitchen remodel, and none of them are the demolition. The first is cabinet lead time. Stock cabinets ship in two to three weeks, semi-custom in four to six, and full-custom local-built boxes take six to ten. We place the cabinet order the day the contract is signed so the wait runs in parallel with demo instead of after it.

The second is countertop fabrication, and this one surprises people. Counters cannot be templated until the cabinets are installed and sitting level, so there is no way to buy this time back early. Template to install runs seven to fourteen days for quartz and ten to twenty-one for granite, and the kitchen sits without counters, a sink, or a cooktop for that entire gap.

The third is trade sequencing. Demo, rough plumbing, rough electrical, drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets, counters, backsplash, appliances, final hookup. Run in that order, the trades hand off cleanly. Run out of order, and you pay twice: once in idle days and once in rework. Keeping that sequence tight is most of what you hire a general contractor to do.

Refresh Tier (4-6 Weeks)

Keeps existing layout. Cabinet refacing or stock cabinet replacement, countertop swap, sink/faucet, appliance updates, lighting, paint.

Week 1: Order cabinets and counters. Schedule demo crew.

Week 2: Demo. Cabinet refacing or stock install. Plumbing/electrical updates.

Week 3: Cabinets leveled. Template counters. Backsplash demo.

Week 4: Counters installed. Sink/faucet hookup. Appliances reinstalled.

Week 5-6: Backsplash, final electrical, lighting, punch list.

Reconfigure Tier (8-12 Weeks)

Same as refresh plus layout changes: moving the sink wall, relocating the range, possibly removing a non-load-bearing wall.

Weeks 1-2: Final design, cabinet order, permits. Demo planning.

Weeks 3-4: Demo. Plumbing relocations. Electrical updates. Structural inspection.

Weeks 5-6: Wall changes if applicable. Drywall, paint primer, flooring.

Weeks 7-8: Cabinet install. Template counters.

Weeks 9-10: Counters install. Sink, appliances. Electrical final.

Weeks 11-12: Backsplash, trim, hardware, punch list.

Gut-Rebuild Tier (12-18 Weeks)

Full structural rebuild plus new mechanicals and finishes.

Weeks 1-3: Architect/design. Permits. Engineering for load-bearing changes.

Weeks 4-5: Demo to studs. Inspect framing/plumbing/electrical/HVAC.

Weeks 6-8: Structural work. Beam install. New rough-ins. Insulation. Drywall.

Weeks 9-11: Drywall finish, paint primer, flooring. Cabinet install begins.

Weeks 12-14: Cabinets complete. Template counters. Tile work.

Weeks 15-17: Counters. Backsplash. Appliances. Final plumbing/electrical.

Week 18: Final cleanup, punch list, walkthrough.

Living Without a Kitchen

Plan the no-kitchen period. Most Murrieta homeowners stay in the home and set up a temporary cooking station: microwave, electric kettle, hot plate, mini-fridge, paper plates, bathroom sink for dishwashing. We help identify the best location for the temp station before demo.

Realistic no-kitchen duration: refresh 1-2 weeks, reconfigure 3-5 weeks, gut-rebuild 6-9 weeks. Eating out for 6+ weeks gets expensive ($1,500-$3,500). Most families do a mix.

Some Murrieta homeowners with budget travel for the worst weeks. A 2-week trip during the cabinet-and-counter window means avoiding the most disruptive phase.

One more scheduling note from experience: do not book the trip, the graduation party, or the holiday hosting against the projected finish date. Build in two weeks of slack. Cabinet deliveries arrive damaged about one run in eight, inspectors keep their own calendars, and the slab yard can push a fabrication date. A schedule with slack absorbs all of that quietly. A schedule without it turns every small delay into a family argument.

Common Questions

Can the project run faster than the timelines above?

Sometimes. A refresh with stock cabinets can finish in 3-4 weeks if material lead times are short. We do not promise faster timelines because predictable matters more.

Why does cabinet lead time vary?

Stock ships in 2-3 weeks. Semi-custom 4-6 weeks. Full-custom 6-10 weeks depending on the local cabinet shop workload.

Can I keep my old appliances?

Yes if recent and standard widths. We coordinate disconnect and reconnect.

Do you handle appliance ordering?

Either. Some Murrieta homeowners want full project management, others have brand preferences and order directly. Coordinate delivery with us.

What if surprises come up mid-project?

Older Murrieta homes (pre-1980) sometimes surface plumbing or electrical issues. We carry a 5-10 percent contingency. Smaller surprises absorb. Larger ones get a written change order.
